Towards the Sea:

Sihanoukville and the Vision of a Modern Cambodia

Following Cambodia’s independence in 1953, the country entered a remarkable period of transformation, with architecture and urban development becoming powerful expressions of national identity, independence, and modernisation. This era gave rise to New Khmer Architecture, a movement that brought together Cambodian and international architects, engineers, and urban planners to shape a new vision for the nation.

At the centre of this ambition was Sihanoukville, envisioned as a modern coastal city and an important gateway connecting Cambodia to international trade. Its development reflected a broader vision of economic independence and national progress, brought to life through ambitious architecture, infrastructure, and urban planning.

Through five architectural projects representing distinct typologies of New Khmer Architecture, this exhibition explores how modern architectural ideas, materials, and construction techniques were thoughtfully adapted to Cambodia’s cultural traditions, tropical climate, and local environment.

Dedicated to the centenary of Lok Ta Vann Molyvann (1926–2017), the exhibition celebrates his visionary contribution to Cambodian architecture and the arts, while reflecting on a defining chapter in the nation's history. It also invites a new generation of architects and designers to consider how architecture can continue to respond meaningfully to context, climate, and culture.
